Attention gloomy copywriters! Here’s how to get your Mojo back!

Freelance copywriters and content writers, here are some tips to get back on track. A little push to write your heart out.

Faint light of table lamp. Headphones on with ‘Imagine Dragons’. Nervous hands on keyboard. Heat of laptop. White fresh document open. Glances on date. Checking time. Opening client’s email for 45th look at the brief.

You know you can do it. But you don’t know how.

Where to start.

What to look.

You just need one word. One word to get all going and write the whole copy.

Yes. Copy.

You are a copywriter. But like all people, you need a little push too. Sharing some things which might help if you are stuck and need some inspiration to get your creative juices flowing.

After all, when it clicks, it’s all magic. Well, sort of.

Try changing your place.

Oh it has helped tremendously. I found that changing place and view really changed my perspective and helped me to write in a way that seemed impossible at first.

Try changing rooms or write in a café or in your friend’s house. Whatever seems comfortable but new also.

Find perfect table height.

When I moved to a new table at my work place, all of a sudden, I couldn’t write. No words used to come in my head. None. Zero. I spent one whole week figuring out what’s wrong. Maybe it’s creative block. Or my ideas are all gone from my head. I couldn’t meet my deadlines. I wrote bad copies which embarrassed me and my employer.

And then I changed my place to sit with my friend and THERE IT WAS! My mojo! I started writing again with much more enthusiasm. Then I figured out that the table height was not at all good for my mojo. And I changed my table the same day and never looked back.

Day is for work. Nights to sleep.

This is what God has made us to be. Our brain functions at high performance early morning. So instead of torturing yourself in night, try to get up early in morning. Have good breakfast. And then start fresh with cute coffee mug on side.

Open windows and let the nature inspire you.

Let music overpower you.

When you are stuck, just leave everything and listen to some high energy music. Whatever seems to get your heart and mind racing. And when it clicks, start writing with a flow to the music. Train your mind to ignore the music and get to the rhythm of it.

Read quotes.

This is one of my favourite tip. Read the quotes and good words from people about the topic related to you. No, don’t copy and the powerful words can ignite the thought process and give you the trigger that you are looking for.

We don’t know sometimes what ideas are in our head until we activate them.

Go through list of words.

Furthermore, go through random words related to the topic or otherwise. There’s bound to be some term, expression or style that will capture your attention.

Learn when to take a break and when not.

Sure, breaks are good. You deserve it. But as copywriter, there’s a constant train of thoughts going. And sometimes, it only reaches your station once.

So avoid breaks when you know you are closer to a ‘writing spree’. Keep knocking the door of your creativity till you are finished writing every word that came out of your head (and heart).

Then take break with smile on your face.

Talk to people about the topic.

Sometimes the people not at all remotely related to the topic can give you insights that experts can’t. Reason being that these people can look from bird’s eye viewpoint.

Sometimes the secret of great copy is in simplicity – to look at things in a modest way.

Step out of your comfort zone.

Copywriters sometimes adopt a single style for their copy. When you get a new project, try to change your tone. Research and keep a different style for the whole project throughout. Chances are that you will produce one a kind copy and your client will be happy too to get something unique.

Keep snacks nearby.

When your brain works, you get hungry. Keep some snacks nearby to get you going without getting up from your desk.

Yes, we have to meet deadlines. But crossing a deadline is better than giving a bad copy. So go out there and get your charm back. We have the unique capability of touching thousands of people’s lives with our words. And that’s not a small thing.

You can do it.
